Tanzanian musicians have been urged to join efforts in fighting against piracy so as to realise sweat of their compositions.
A new online music distributor platform known as M/s Mkito has urged musicians to cooperate and realize at least 60 percent of their total music sales from online.
M/s Mkito has reached such a decision after realising that the numbers of internet users in a decade have increased from 260,000 to over 6,700,000 where most of consumers are reported to access the music through mobile telephone devices.
The director and founder of M/s Mkito, Sune Mushendwa said in an exclusive interview that most musicians in the country are victims of piracy but the new platform will retain 100 percent of the rights for their works.
‘This is the first ever East Africa platform to operate through technology, we are creating the source of income to artists. For all the downloaded music, they will get paid 60 percent of the total sales’, he said.
The latest study shows that 70 percent of internet users in Africa get the access through mobile devices where as by 2017 it is expected the smart phone penetration to reach 22 percent.
Sune noted that about 300 musicians have concluded a deal with M/s Mkito and the figure is expected to rise.
However; a Bongo Flavor artist Chege Chigunda or popularly known as ‘Chege’ said it has been abou4t a year since he joined M/s Mkito and his revenue is better off than before although he wishes to get more.
‘I get 1,000,000/- a year and I know M/s Mkito could do more than this if it’s meant to boost our income,’ he said.
Mkito user will be able to download a free music supported with adds but is required to pay 250/- without advertisements whereas for advertisers they will have to pay 100/- per one song downloaded.
Nevertheless, the artists will be able to make self promotion, complete review of music sales and an exposure for their mosaics.
