Kikwete to police: Get Z'bar bomb attackers

President Jakaya Kikwete has directed the police to ensure that they arrest and bring to justice people who carried out a bomb attack that killed one person and injured seven others in Zanzibar on Friday night.

According to a statement issued by Directorate of Presidential Communications offering condolences to Zanzibar’s President- Dr Ali Mohamed Shein, circulated to the media yesterday, Kikwete condemned the act.

“This is an act that should be condemned by all who love peace…it is a barbaric and cowardly act which is unacceptable to the world,” said Kikwete, directing the police to ensure that they apprehended the culprits and brought them to justice.
According to the police, one person was killed in the attack on Friday at 20:00hours at the Darajani commercial district of Stone Town, the UNESCO-listed world heritage site in the Isles.

Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, Urban West Regional Police Commander Mkadam Khamis Mkadam said the bomb that was used is not home made.

“So far we have established that the bomb is not locally made but we are yet to establish where it was manufactured and how it found its way into the country,” noted the commander.

He said no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
But Mkadam said at least four of the seven persons who were admitted have been discharged while three others are still getting treatment.

He named the deceased as Muhammed Abdallah Mkumbalagula (27), a resident of Tanga who arrived in the Isles on Monday last week on a religious assignment.
The injured include Kassim Mafuta Kassim (38), also a resident of Tanga, while the rest are Zanzibaris, namely Hamad Mansour Khamis (46), Suleiman Ali Juma (21), Khelef Abdallah Abdallah (21), Kassim Issa Mahmoud, Ahmed Haidar (47) and Halid Ahmed Haidar (16).

Earlier yesterday Mkadam said police from criminal investigation department from Tanzania Mainland had arrived in the Isles to help their counterparts in the hunt for the culprits.

“Our fellow CIDs from Tanzania Mainland are here and we are continuing with investigations,” he said.

Last year suspected Islamist attackers hurled acid on the faces of two British teenage girls as they strolled through Stone Town, during preparations for the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
