SUMATRA envisions switching to online operations

Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (Sumatra)
The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (Sumatra) is yet to switch to online operations in serving large corporations as the move would reduce the level of paperwork, time needed to fill in application forms and at the same time minimise errors and speed up service delivery.

This was said over the weekend by Alhaj Habib Suluo, Sumatra’s Finance Director at a function of wrapping up a training on Transport and Logistics held in Dar es Salaam as part of employees capacity building programme of the Azam Inland Container Depot (AICD).

Representing Sumatra’s Director General, Alhaj Suluo said: “Giant transport companies with many vehicles will be served electronically…for instance, it takes the whole day to serve a company such as Bakhresa as it has more than 1,000 cars.”

“But by going online, Sumatra will reduce the amount of paperwork and the level of time consumed to fill in application forms. We will also minimise errors as computers will detect before submission and thus speed up our service delivery system,” he added.

According to him, Transport and Logistics is a cross-cutting avenue and if it is to contribute massively to the country’s economy then there is a need for the Transport and Logistics practitioners to have qualified international training standard.

Therefore, the Sumatra’s Finance Director applauded the AICD for providing such training opportunity for its workers but urging the Inland Containers Deport (ICDs) in the country to stop delaying tactics as it always disturbs customers’ budget.

“There is this cadre…clearing and forwarding agents, they don’t have formal accreditation or any board to regulate them. Anyone can operate as long as they have business license, Sumatra wants them accredited, we are working with the Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) and we already have a class where they will be receiving training and plans are underway to provide them with qualified tutors,” he said.

Earlier, Ashraf Khan; AICD General Manager said his company decided to introduce employee capacity building programme to enhance quality service delivery in the Logistic and Transport Industry in Tanzania.

“We do have many ventures in Tanzania and other neighboring countries which need transport storage, procurement and supply. Therefore, since we are pro-quality service; we bought the idea sold to us by The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) so as to train our people,” he expounded.

The training was conducted by CILT; an international body of logistics and transport professionals established in the United Kingdom in 1919 and received the royal Charter in 1926 and was registered in the country under the Societies Act, Cap 337 in 2008.

CILT is meant to raise the standard of performance of the logistics and transport industry in the country, to promote safety and security in all modes of transport, foster investigation and research into the development of logistics and transport and provide professional advice to the industry, government and the community.
