President Jakaya Kikwete President Jakaya Kikwete has called upon African nations to develop inclusive policies that serve public interest as a key method to addressing terrorism in their countries. In the press statement from the Directorate of Presidential Communication circulated to the media yesterday, Kikwete said, terrorism in some cases, is the result of policies that are not inclusive, discriminative and/or deny some groups of their basic rights. “Terrorism is a big challenge and there is not a single country in the World today that is not affected by it,” the President acknowledged before the Africa Union Peace and Security Council Summit on Terrorism mid this week in Nairobi, Kenya. “There is also no country that can curb this challenge on its own and therefore, it is important that we join forces at all levels,” President Kikwete urged. He told the delegates that it is vital that all leaderships seek out underlining causes of terror attacks and address them. “To do this, economic and social policies have a great role to play,” he reminded the gathering. “It is a must for countries to come up with policies that are beneficial to all groups, policies that are geared towards achieving social economic development to all, policies that do not exclude other groups based on their ethnicity, religion, district or regionalism,” he told them. He said it is a must to have policies that provide equal rights to basic services, socially and economically and that it is also vital that developed policies offer basic rights to all people irrespective of their political affiliations. “When such is not done, an environment is created within which establishment and nurturing of terrorism occurs,” he warned. The one day Africa Union Peace and Security Council Summit on Terrorism begun Monday and ended Tuesday in Kenya under the Chairmanship of Idrisa Debby President of Chad. SOURCE: THE GUARDIAN
