The development comes as Mtwara regional authorities recently announced plan to establish the said institute of science and technology in a bid to increase the number of oil and gas experts in the region.
Addressing the Mtwara Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) over the weekend, the Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Joseph Simbakalia, attributed the slow pace of development in the area to lack experts and poor infrastructure.
He said to ensure the region’s sustainable development there must be an international science and technology institute in the region.
“If we want to have rapid economic transformations in our region from the natural gas discoveries here, then we must make deliberate efforts to educate our people in the appropriate fields,” he said.
Simbakalia further said that establishment of the training institute is in accordance to the government’s Big Results Now (BRN) initiative.
In his opening remarks, the Mtwara Regional Administrative Secretary, Alfred Luanda, said the region’s development can only be attained if officials take necessary steps to improve the level of education for the residents of Mtwara and the vicinities.
