A 106m/- worth x-ray machine has been donated to the Tarime District hospital by African Barrick Gold’s (ABG) subsidiary North Mara Gold Mine (NMGM).
The gold giant says the donation is part and parcel of its ongoing initiatives to support development of the health sector in the district.
Speaking during the handover ceremony held over the weekend at the Tarime District Hospital, the North Mara Gold Mine General Manager Gary Chapman reiterated his company’s commitment to supporting various community development initiatives in the district.
“This commitment is part of our efforts to support sustainable development for all communities surrounding the mine,” he said.
Through the ABG Maendeleo Fund, the gold firm has greatly invested in various community development initiatives in the health and education sectors as well as in securing reliable safe and clean water.
The firm has also supported various infrastructural development and economic improvement projects in the region, the general manager was keen to note.
“We believe a healthy mind lives in a healthy body and this is our guiding principal when it comes to investing in the health sector,” he said
“This state -of -the-art X -ray machine is only a small part of our efforts to support the health sector development of Tarime District…” he added.
Chapman reiterated the company’s commitment to continue partnering with various stakeholders in the region to create a sustainable development environment for communities there.
Notably, NMGM has been instrumental in supporting various health projects in the seven villages surrounding the mine.
Among its efforts include donation of USD 69,999 worth of medical equipment to Nyamwaga Health Center and Matongo Dispensary in Tarime District earlier this year along with other donations given to the Sungu Sungu Hospital among others.
“We are already working on support programmes for Kerende and Genkuru health facilities during this month of August 2014,” the general manager revealed.
Tarime District Commissioner John Henjewele hailed the donation and said the district authority would continue supporting the investors and their initiatives to help community development projects in areas of health, education and sanitation.
The DC emphasised the need for recipient hospitals to care for the equipments and machines they receive to increase longevity.
